I got an ITIN last year when I did some seminars/workshops/concerts in
New York state.  The University that invited me took care of most of
the details.  Their administrative staff were used to these
considerations since they're close to the border and often hire
lecturers or artists in residence from Canada.  I'd check with UCSC,
I'm sure they have someone on staff that can work this out for you...
I'm not sure about form 8233?  I don't remember having to go through
that process, but I'll check my files when I get home and I'll get
back to you if I find anything helpful.

Are you a member of a musicians' union, association or guild?  I'm a
Canadian member of the AFM and I've found them very helpful with these
issues.

Another thing to look into as a non-American working in the US is what
tax treaty, if any, exist between your country of residence and the
US.  This will determine whether you pay income tax to the IRS or to
your home country on income gained while working in the US.
